In Hobscheid, in western Luxembourg, a school puts Montessori education into practice: children learn at their own pace, through experience, in a prepared environment that fosters their independence. The rooms are designed in that spirit, with materials at children’s height and spaces where they can move about freely.
But the classroom does not stop at the walls. Nature being central to the educational project, the children go out each week to the forest, the vegetable garden or the farm. Observing, handling, building, getting it wrong: so many skills and lessons they take away for life.
The adult is not the one who imparts knowledge from the front of the room, but the one who observes, inspires, supports and accompanies.
