Founded in 1998 by farmers from the region, who still hold its capital today, Nordwand develops and operates wind farms in northern Luxembourg. Its current project is taking shape in Derenbach, the very place where the company built its first turbines in 1999. An older installation is being replaced there by a new-generation turbine capable of producing substantially more electricity. This renewal is financed by a Spuerkeess loan at a reduced rate subsidised by etika, two partners who have supported Nordwand since its earliest days. On the plateaus of the Oesling, wind turbines punctuate the horizon. Behind these monumental silhouettes lies work that largely goes unseen: construction sites, maintenance, operations at height. More than twenty-five years after it was founded, this pioneering company shows that the energy transition can be carried by rural communities themselves.
